Hi-GAL is coming !!!

Hi-GAL is coming !!!

Hi-GAL is coming !!!

This fantastic picture is a 70-170-350um composite image of the Galactic Plane at the longitude of 30°. The outstanding Star Formation regions W43 and G29.9 can easily be spotted at the left and center of the image. Most remarkable features that can be seen are shock fronts from HII regions, bubbles, Interstellar medium structured at all scales, and remarkable filamentary structures with on-going star formation.

Hi-GAL is the Herschel Open Time Key-Project that will map our Inner Galaxy (-60° < l < +60°, -1° < b < +1°) in 5 bands between 60 and 600μm at a diffraction-limited 4-40" spatial resolution.

Hi-GAL embodies the optimum combination of Herschel wavelength coverage, sensitivity, mapping strategy and speed to deliver, in a single and homogeneous dataset of extraordinary legacy value, the ultimate census, temperature, luminosity, mass and Spectral Energy Distribution of star forming regions and cold ISM structures in all the environments of the Galactic ecosystem, at unprecedented resolutions, and at all scales from massive objects in protoclusters to the full spiral arm.

The picture represents the top view of the Milky Way as it was most recently proposed (see here) based on the results of the Spitzer GLIMPSE survey
