Hi-GAL uses the PACS and SPIRE cameras in Parallel mode, explicitly designed to allow observations of large areas of sky with the two cameras at the same time. In this way we will collect in one pass data at 70, 170, 250, 350 and 500μm simultaneously. The entire Galactic Plane will be covered with slightly overlapping tiles of size 2ºx2º. Each tile will be covered with two raster maps done in sequence and with mutually orthogonal scanning angles; this strategy is designed to minimize the effects of slow instrumental drifts and 1/f noise in general. The figure shows a typical tile with the areas covered by PACS (red) and SPIRE (green); the two orthogonal raster patterns can easily be recognized.
